Warming an acupuncture point by moxibustion is a different treatment than acupuncture itself and is often used as a supplement treatment. Moxibustion is the burning of a combination of herbs including primarily mugwort.
If you are worried about needles then laser acupuncture is perfect! Using laser light is a sophisticated, painless and enjoyable new approach to stimulating acupuncture points on the body without the insertion of the traditionally fine needles. Most people will feel either slight warmth or no sensation at all.

Laser acupuncture is a wonderfully safe, gentle and strengthening treatment: it stimulates the natural healing process and restores the balance of the body at cellular level. For muscular-skeletal disorders such as back, neck, shoulder or knee pain, the laser can be used over a larger area to encourage the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer. It promotes faster healing, reduces inflammation, relaxes muscles, enhances the immune system and increases the speed and quality of bone repair. If you have broken a bone, recently had surgery or have osteopathy or chiropractic care, laser therapy will work to help speed recovery.
I became interested in the potential of low level laser therapy after I had been practicing acupuncture for about a year and wanted other ways to stimulate acupuncture points which would be useful for children and adults who were concerned about the use of needles.
I did my training in the USA with David Rindge and Healing Light Seminars: David is a pioneer of laser therapy and helped to establish the Florida Independent Investigational Review Board for LASER Acupuncture Research so that laser therapy might be evaluated and become accessible to many more patients and practitioners. In more than thirty-five years of research and clinical use, an adverse reaction has never been documented. In contrast to surgical lasers which employ greater power and intensity, laser therapy is customarily administered using gentle, non-ionizing radiation below the threshold of thermal damage to tissue. This may account for its excellent safety record. His web site incorporates an extensive research library.

“I had acupuncture with Heather for my hay fever and couldn’t believe the difference it made. I used to suffer really badly and now I can look forward to the summer instead of dreading it. Everyone who suffers with hay fever should try it”
